read for the record 2018
Jumpstart celebrated its 13th annual Read for the Record on October 25, 2018. This year’s book is Maybe Something Beautiful by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael López. Jumpstart’s Read for the Record brings together millions of people each year in classrooms, libraries, community centers, and homes across the US. This annual campaign was launched over a decade ago to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for EVERY child, so that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
Colonial celebrated Read for the Record by reading the book in our art classes. Our CAPA art students also visited Ms. Norell's special needs classroom to read the book to the students.

read for the record 2017
Join the millions of children and adults who’ll be participating in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® this year! Jumpstart is celebrating the 12th anniversary of its annual campaign, which gathers over 2 million people together around the world to read the same book on the same day. Read for the Record brings much needed attention to inequities in early childhood education, inspires adults to read with children, spurs policymakers and organizations to take action towards transformative change in early education, and puts books in the hands of children across the country.
This year’s campaign book, Quackers by Liz Wong, is a wonderful story that follows a kitten who grows up believing he is a duck. This tale is about understanding, acceptance, and learning it’s ok to be whoever you want to be. Every year, Jumpstart produces a special edition of its Read for the Record campaign book that features vocabulary tips, reading comprehension questions, and more resources to ‘jumpstart’ a child’s curiosity. Special editions are available in both English and Spanish.

National Read Across America Day
Read for the Record Day was held on Thursday, October 27, 2016. People across the country united to read the children’s book The Bear Ate Your Sandwich. This is in support of the mission to work toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Our principal, Mr. Fifer, read the book to the school over the intercom so all students would have a chance to hear the story.

National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. Principal Fifer and the student council read to our Exceptional Students in the library.

RIVERKINGS READING PROGRAM
The RiverKings Read program is off to a great start! We have received a life size cutout of a RiverKings hockey player and bookmarks to get us in the RiverKings reading spirit! Students have been busy reading and filling out their monthly reading logs. On December 8, the Best Buddies and the Lunch Bunch went to a hockey game. It was a fun time enjoyed by all.
Read to Succeed
The Six Flags: Read to Succeed program is sponsored by Six Flags to promote literacy by encouraging students through sixth grade to read independently. Colonial students complete book reports to support their comprehension. Upon completion of six book reports by March 1, 2016, students are eligible to receive a free ticket to Six Flags-St. Louis. Tickets will be delivered to Colonial by the end of the school year.
BOOK IT!
Colonial is also participating in the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! National Reading Incentive Program for sixth grade students. The BOOK IT! program has been promoting student literacy for 27 years. With a goal of changing "have to read" to "want to read," students are given incentives for reading independently.
Students will receive a coupon for a free personal pan pizza when they read a book and complete a book report. Coupons will be distributed at the end of each month.

Lunch Bunch
The Lunch Bunch program is dedicated to encouraging the love of independent reading by helping students discover new literary genres and share their thoughts on the selected books with their peers. The group facilitates thoughtful discussion and review of the monthly book and encourages fellowship among the students. Students may participate in all or any monthly book discussions. To participate, students must read the book and complete the required book activity by the set deadline. They will then be invited to the library for a pizza lunch and group discussion. See the Lunch Bunch page for details.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Colonial library hosts a Scholastic Book Fair twice a year. The fall book fair features a wide variety of popular titles, posters, and gift items. The spring book fair features the same large selection at reduced prices. A portion of the proceeds of each book fair benefits the library and is used to purchase new materials and resources for students and teachers.
The 2015-2016 Fall Book Fair was held in November and was a great success! Thank you for supporting the Colonial Middle School Library.

READ FOR THE RECORD ~ October 22, 2015!
Colonial participated in Read for the Record again this year!
This is the 10th anniversary of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record®, a global campaign that generates public support for high-quality early learning and highlights the importance of building children’s vocabulary and love for reading. On October 22, 2015, children and adults worldwide took action by participating in the world’s largest shared reading experience. Each year, Jumpstart selects one children’s book as the catalyst for Read for the Record. This year’s campaign book, Not Norman: A Goldfish Story, written by Kelly Bennett and illustrated by Noah Z. Jones, is a humorous tale about a child who finds a new friend in an unexpected place. With vivid illustrations and expressive language, the story is sure to engage children and adults of all ages. We did our part in helping break the world reading record (again)! for the most people reading the same book on the same day. All Shelby County schools are encouraged to take part in this great event.

Colonial Middle hosts author visits when a special guest is available. This is a great opportunity for students to meet professional writers and ask questions about related topics. One recent guest was Karyn Henley, author of several YA novels including Breath of an Angel and Eye of the Sword.
